Social Media and Mental Health

Social Media and Mental Health

Since the rise of technology, a lot of people have abandoned traditional methods of acquiring information in favor of digital alternatives. Hence, social media is now an important part of the lives of over half the world's population, a number that has significantly increased since the COVID outbreak. Consequently, many of the regular activities that we would have done physically are now being done virtually, and some of the time in loneliness too. Researchers are of the opinion that the average person spends 2 hours and 27 minutes daily on social media. While, teens and young adults spend an average of up to 5.8 hours daily on social media. Even though social media platforms offer a space for self-expression and interaction, they also have an impact on our mental well-being.

Negative Effects of Social Media on Mental Health

Studies have shown that excessive social media use leads to increased feelings of anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, and loneliness. Regular, high quality sleep is essential for well-being, and evidence shows that sleeping problems, as a result of excessive social media use, contributes to adverse mental health effects, such as depression, memory loss and hallucinations. Another factor that negatively affects mental health is social comparison. Constant exposure to the alleged glamorous lives of celebrities and people within their age bracket, could make users spiral into a state of depression, envy and low self-esteem. Cyberbullying and online harassment are other factors with devastating consequences for victims' mental health. The anonymity and distance provided by the internet can embolden individuals to engage in toxic behavior, leading to increased anxiety, antisocial behavior and depression among targets.

Positive Effects of Social Media on Mental Health

While social media can contribute to mental health issues, it also has the potential to be part of the solution. Many mental health organizations and professionals use social media platforms to provide resources, support, and education. Hashtags like #mentalhealthawareness and #selfcare promote mental health conversations, reduce stigma, and encourage individuals to seek support.
